Fury over Fury

Following the recent comments  about homosexuality made by former World Middleweight boxing champion, Manny Pacquiao, which landed him in hot water, I’ve been looking back at the similarities with the Tyson Fury furore over his Mail on Sunday interview given just after winning the World Heavyweight Boxing title last October.

Fury said: ‘There are only three things that need to be accomplished before the devil comes home. One of them is homosexuality being legal in countries, one of them is abortion and the other is paedophilia’. Whilst he may not have been entirely correct theologically speaking, despite what the mass media would have you believe at the time, from a biblical perspective the essence of his message is accurate.

Fury stated that the devil is very busy and successful right now in sowing evil all over the world. Well if you follow the news, it is clear that all is not well in the world. When people are killed just for their religious beliefs, horrific deeds carried out towards children and adults on the increase and corruption is and has been rife amongst those that lead the country and some of our leading institutions, you would be forgiven for wondering what on earth is going on? Christians would argue that we are living in ‘End times.’

By saying the devil is busy and active right now he actually contradicts his arguments that the ingredients are ripe for the devil to return, for those ingredients have been in place for some years now.  Far from waiting for an invitation to return, many would say he is already alive and kicking amidst us here on planet Earth.

Sexual immorality such as that we’re hearing about with the historic shennanigans at the BBC are not the only “signs of the times” for there are numerous biblical references to end times such as Mathew 24:5-20: For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains when something new is about to be born. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. …”

There is so much reluctance to promote Christianity in a Christian country like England that it is becoming absurd. For instance there have been stories where nurses have been disciplined for praying for seriously ill patients or Air Stewardesses disciplined for wearing the sign of the cross.

Fury on women

Whilst there’s nothing especially biblical about saying “a woman’s place is in the kitchen or on her back” and quite rightly that comment attracted a lot of ire, if Fury had simply made the point that in the bible the woman was subservient to the man, who was head of the church and head of the household he would have been on firmer ground. “Now I want you to realise that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God…..”  1 Corinthians 14:34-35

Whilst Fury can be rightly criticised for his views on women and remember they are only his personal views (based on his traveller upbringing and culture), he is not recommending or pushing these on anyone. The rest of his views generally stand up to theological scrutiny. For many people, this furore and that surrounding Manny Pacquiao this month, says more about the non-Christian’s in society, dominating media and popular discourse. They try to shut down people who wish to make any reference to the bible, Christianity and so called “old fashioned values.

Did you read his actual interview? I found the media quite selective and sensational with it’s reporting. It’s well worth reading or listening to the audio of it below.  I would love to read your views so feel free to post them on the comments section below.
