Billed as a gag every 30 seconds Irish Comedian Rory O’Hanlon certainly fulfilled that promise. In an outstanding 60 minute performance Rory caused tears of laughter to fall from eyes and had a packed solid room simply put laughing their heads off.
Many of his routines reflect the fact he is a well travelled comedian, but not just UK wide like most professional comedians. His career has taken him overseas to perform in places such as Barcelona and Russia.
Making himself the butt of his own jokes with a series of self deprecatory asides was a real blast. This offered him the opportunity to praise the more romantic sounding language of some of our continental cousins and put on French, Italian, Russian and Spanish accents.
There was humour found too in his strict upbringing in Ireland, which he compared to the equally tough experiences of many African and Caribbean children, something which many African-Caribbean comedians jokes about.
His audience banter and repartee was first class as he made it seem effortless to create humour out of audience from his genial audience interactions.
Sitting Room only
Fans were so keen to get into the show that people resorted to sitting on the floor to catch the show. This was not so much standing room only, more sitting room only. Just don’t tell health & safety!
The swearing is still there in spades, which I criticised last year, but seeing him again I see more clearly that it’s a vital part of his working class character and stage persona.
Rory is a master at his craft and provided non-stop laughter throughout his highly entertaining set. He joked re his career going so well that he’s in the same small sized venue three years running, but it is clear from this showing that a far, far bigger venue will be required for 2016 to accommodate his growing following.
