UK Urban Web Fest 2013
Thursday 18th July 2013
It was a pleasure to attend the first UK Urban Web Fest 2013 at Cineworld, Ilford. Organised and hosted by award winning Actor and Director of ‘All About the McKenzies‘ Mr Samuell Benta, 8 short films were shown plus the season finale of ‘All About the Mckenzies.’
The films were of varying quality from Black film makers. Some were of the very highest, ready for TV quality, both in terms of writing, direction and film quality. Films shown included:
- The Big Wide World
- Sorry We Don’t Help Darkies
- Above the Waist
- All about The McKenzies
- 247 (Music video)
View the trailer for excerpts from each film, including a cameo from Best Male Comedian 2012 Slim in the final episode of ‘All about the McKenzies‘. I found all films quite entertaining and interesting to a varying degrees. As just short extracts were shown you were at times left wanting more, which is a compliment to the film producers, directors and actors.
Even this blogger got a surprise near the end of the night. I was invited onto the stage by Samuell to say a few words about The Black Comedy Awards 2013. It gave me great pleasure to talk about the awards and announce to the audience that ‘All About the McKenzie’s’ was a nominee for ‘Best Web Series’ . The awards take place in October 2013 at The Clapham Grand.
Afterwards interviews were given and a nice after party was held at the nearby ‘If Bar’. Good music and plenty of dancing and chatting away to young film makers and other guests from the arts and media world.
The cinema attendance was disappointing considering the beautiful cinema that had been booked for this inaugural event. However, these things take time and I’m sure with the right effort, planning, marketing and commitment to the project this could grow into something big. I believe the Web Series market is an expanding one as film makers seek to put their material out on the internet, rather than rely on the discretion of television executives who are not showing an interest in broadcasting these programmes and films. Well except one that is. Samuell announced on the night that a new series of ‘All About the McKenzies’ has been commissioned for a bran new channel launching in 2014 called ‘London Live’.
