Do ya think I’m sexy? …. Helloooo. Don’t all rush at once to answer will you?

Don’t worry, I’m not really looking to you, my lovely reader, in a bout of doubt filled depressive low self-esteem for affirmation about my virile manliness (or not as the case may be … for those with poor eyesight)!

No, this, as all Rod Stewart and music fans alike fans know is one of the legendary rocker Rod Stewart’s most famous songs. At a packed ‘Tropic at Ruislip’ none other than Rod Stewart himself was singing this famous old classic. In Ruislip for the bargain price of just £6 too. The mind boggles. Well really it was tribute act Gary Pease, the next best thing to Rod Stewart, a top tribute act, belting out this song in a lung busting rendition that had everyone up on their feet.

The Rod Stewart Experience

The Rod Stewart Experience is a cracking tribute act. He’s got the look, moves and voice down to a T. The voice was particularly powerful though there was a really gravelly tone to it that wasn’t exactly Rod sounding. But hey, that’s mere detail that didn’t spoil a brilliant show. Rod beautifully sang many familiar hits including ‘Maggie May’, ‘I am sailing’, ‘Baby Jane’ and ‘Have I Told you Lately.’  Many I’d not heard for some time and it was an absolute joy to hear them again. Live for the first time. As well as that, what struck you was just how many hits Rod has had and how they have seered themselves into our collective heads. His songs are such a big part of the rich musical tapestry of our nation.

I particularly loved the crowd sing-a-longs and observing the guy sporting a fetching blonde wig having fun dancing about. At one point the wigmaster, as I hereby name him, threw the wig at Rod and it landed perfectly on Rod’s head!

Promoter Philip said, “Looking around the room I could not see one person who did not appear to be having a good time.”  I could not agree more. It was a double success for Philip too that day, as he’d hot footed it from Wembley Stadium to prepare for tonight’s gig having watched his beloved Bradford City win the play off final to League One.

Due to his busy schedule, The Rod Stewart Experience will not return to Tropics until 10 January 2015. As it turns out however, by a strange co-incidence the real Rod Stewart starts his world tour in June 2013 (4th and 6th June at the02 London) so I and others fans won’t have to wait long for the real experience. The real Rod Stewart has a lot to live up to and this gig has definitely whetted my appetite to see him in June.

That could be quite a week in fact as I’ll be seeing ‘The Secret Police’ in the first week of June, for they are back at Tropic of Ruislip on 7th June 2013. I’ve seen them twice before and having thoroughly enjoyed seeing The Police and Sting countless times over the years, certainly wouldn’t disagree with their status as “the world’s greatest Police tribute band.”

I agree with this review but he is much better when he plays with his live band, less variety but much more interaction. It is a great shame that he no longer plays with “The Facez” as they were excellent and covered more of the earlier Faces/Rod solo material before the “dreaded” disco era.

The gravelly tone was always a Rod characteristic and was only softened due to his relatively recent medical problems. Also, when he played with The Facez there was always a solo set with all the solo hits. However Gary never fails to produce a great night whichever set he plays.

Thank you Jim K. As you gathered I thought the show was great solo style, so I wouldn’t mind seeing him with the band to see how it would be, as you say, an even better experience. I will have to keep a look out for him again when he’s next in London.
