As a meat and fish loving man, it had never appealed to me to eat at a vegetarian restaurant. However I decided to try Henderson’s of Edinburgh, an organic food restaurant and shop.
Henderson’s is a large restaurant, with upstairs and downstairs seating and yet it is able to create a sense of intimacy. This is largely due to a Jazz Pianist serving up beautiful, low-key background musical entertainment.
A carnivore’s biggest nightmare is to be dissatisfied by a vegetarian or vegan meal. This was not the case here. We had the vegetable risotto and chick pea and aubergine curry with rice. Both were extremely tasty, filling and at under £10 a dish, reasonably priced.
Each main course fully satisfied a large appetite. This was followed by desert, strawberry gateaux and cherry pie, both accompanied with fresh cream. This provided a fantastic ‘topping’ to the meal.
The service was especially impressive. The meal was on our table barely minutes after we sat down to eat and the waiter was attentive without being intrusive.
The smell of bread being baked wafting across the restaurant only served to remind us of the freshly cooked food which the 50 year reputation of Henderson’s has been built on.
I can see why this family run restaurant has been successful for three generations since it first opened in Edinburgh half a century ago in 1962. I look forward to dining there again.
