Adam Hills Charity Fundraiser for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital 23.59pm 19th August 2012 Edinburgh Fringe
GOLD MEDAL rating
Brilliant night of top quality comedy from top Australian Comedian and Fringe regular Adam Hills. This year he is in a smaller venue, Assembly Halls, by his standards to create a more intimate, personal feel in keeping with the show’s theme.
‘Adam Hills: Messing Around‘ sees him taking to the stage with no script, no act and with the sole intention of talking to and with, not at, the audience. Not every Comedian could have pulled this off, but Adam does seemingly effortlessly. I loved the unique start to the show, that saw him take off to the back of the Assembly Hall and chat to latecomers and then those sat at the back – thinking they were “safe” from being talked to!
He even met James Bond! Well, a retired man whom he’d names James Bond during a previous Fringe show in 2010. What was funny here was not just bringing Mr Bond onto the stage for photos, but the retiring of Mr Bond and replacing him with a younger Bond plucked from the audience. See photos and Adam’s own review adamhill.eu from Mess Around: Show 14.
Adam Hills is a very amiable and funny man, capable of finding the funny in most people and situations, without ever really embarrassing his audience members, which some people fear about being “picked on” at a gig. He is also into his technology and takes plenty of photos during the show and makes the occasional tweet to get public responses. Tonight he posted a photo of the new Bond with two Bond girls, mother and daughter!
It was also a bit of an education too, as he recited Robert Louis Stephenson writing on Edinburgh from the c18; informed us about Normal Ballout and bemoaned the fact at one gig the whole audience new the name of Angelina and Brad Pitt’s daughter, yet didn’t know who Norman was.
A big highlight was the appearance of Brenton Rickard, Australian Olympic Swimmer (Bronze in 4 x 100m in London 2012, plus 2 Silver’s in Beijing). He’d given Adam his swimming trunks to auction of at Adam’s Hector charity fundraiser gig for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh, Sunday 19th August 2012 at 23.59pm.
The appearance of Brenton raised the roof. If anyone has any Olympic memorabilia, or more importantly knows any Olympian’s who may have such, then please get in touch ASAP.
Great show and look forward to watching Adam Hills as he co-hosts C4 coverage of the London 2012 Paralympics from 29th August to 12th September 2012.
