Dana Alexander – New Arrival
Underbelly, 56 Cowgate, EH1 1EG. 8pm Daily. 4-28th August 2011. £8-£10. ****
Fresh to the UK, meet new arrival, Dana Alexander. As the only black comedienne in Canada, Dana’s comedic style is both refreshing and irreverent. Original and outspoken, a comic you do not want to miss. Text supplied by festival and/or promoter.
Show review 10th August 2011 ****
Dana Alexander was certainly a welcome ‘New Arrival’ to the Edinburgh Fringe and delivered an excellent, very funny show. A rip roaring breath of fresh air to the Fringe. Considering Dana’s a newcomer to Britain, she delivered a polished, entertaining and hilarious performance, with frequent sharp intake of breath moments, with what she termed her “roll of the dice” jokes – aka edgy hit or miss jokes, which were more often than not absolutely hit the bull’s eye.
There’s a general warmth about Dana Alexander that makes her an engaging performer you want to listen to and learn more about her life as she jokes about being single, being a larger lady; comparing the size of American and Canadian women to British women. Some of the jokes were pretty crude, which is fine, but may not be everyone’s cup of tea. That said there didn’t seem to be any objections from the audience who delighted in her rawness.
It would have been nice to see more topical references from Dana, especially when she mentioned that she had been living in Tottenham prior to coming to the festival, bearing in mind the riots going on there between 6-7th August. Similarly there were very few references to Canada or differences between Canadian life and life in England, which one would have expected.
Nonetheless that didn’t detract from a very funny show. I for one was delighted to have discovered a new talent.
